IPL Team Franchise Owners of Season 2 (2009)


The Indian Premier League is a Twenty20 cricket competition created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and chaired by the Chairman & Commissioner IPL, BCCI Vice President Lalit Modi. The first season of the Indian Premier League commenced on 18 April 2008 and ended on 1 June 2008 with the victory of the Rajasthan Royals in the final at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.


The tournament will be hosted by South Africa and the IPL Second Season is scheduled between April 18 and May 24, 2009. All these Indian Premier League franchises are based on a city each including, Mumbai, Mohali, Delhi, Rajasthan, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.
Listed below are the details of the 8 IPL Cricket 2009 Team Franchise Owners :

1. Bangalore Franchise

Royal Challengers Bangalore is the team representing the city of Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, the inaugural Twenty20 cricket tournament to be held in South Africa. The team Bangalore Royal Challengers of Indian Premier League is owned by the liquor magnate Vijay Mallya, the chairman of UB Group and was promoted by Katrina Kaif. Charu Sharma is the CEO of the team and Rahul Dravid is the Icon Player. Ray Jennings, the former South African coach, is the coach of the team and Venkatesh Prasad is the bowling coach. Martin Crowe, the former New Zealand captain, has also been signed-in as a member of the management team.



Dr Vijay Mallya is an Indian businessman and Rajya Sabha MP. The son of industrialist Vittal Mallya, he is the Chairman of the United Breweries Group and Kingfisher Airlines, which draws its name from United Breweries Group’s flagship beer brand, Kingfisher. The company markets most of its beer under the Kingfisher brand and has also launched Kingfisher Airlines, a domestic airline service in India. Kevin Pietersen has been named captain of the Bangalore Royal Challengers, ending the uncertainty over who would lead the side in the IPL’s second season. Bangalore Royal Challengers Team cost is $111.6 million.

2. Mohali Kings XI Punjab Franchise

Mohali Kings XI Punjab is a cricket franchise based in Mohali in the eight team Indian Premier League. The team is led by Yuvraj Singh who is also the Icon Player. The team is coached by Tom Moody, the former Australian all rounder. This IPL Cricket 2009 Team is owned by Bollywood Actress Preity Zinta, Ness Wadia of Bombay Dyeing and Karan Paul of Apeejay Surendera Group and Mohit Burman (Dabur). Kings XI Punjab Team cost is $75 million.
Preity Zinta is an Indian film actress. She has appeared in Hindi cinemas of Bollywood, as well as Telugu and English language movies. Ness Wadia is the son of Nusli Wadia and Maureen Wadia and the heir to one of India’s most prestigious businesses, Bombay Dyeing. He is the great grandson of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, founder of Pakistan. He is Joint Managing Director of The Bombay Dyeing & Manufacturing Co. Ltd.

Mr Karan Paul, the son of late Surrendra Paul, is the Chairman of the Apeejay Surrendra Group. The Apeejay Surrendra Group is a conglomerate with interest in Tea, Shipping, Financial Services, Retail, Hospitality, Education, Real Estate, Etc. The Apeejay Surrendra Group employs close to 42000 people. They have aquired Typhoo, UK’s third largest and an over 100-year-old iconic British tea brand.

Mohit Burman is son of VC Burman. At present he is Director and Board Member of Dabur Ltd and and Chairman of Dabur Pharma Ltd. Mohit along with his borther has floated a Private Equity Fund to invest into Indian Companies. The company Dabur India Limited was founded by Dr. S. K. Burman in 1884 as a small pharmacy in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Today it is the fourth largest FMCG Company in India with interests in Health Care, Personal Care and Food Products. It is most famous for Dabur Chyawanprash and Hajmola.

3. Rajasthan Royal Franchise

Rajasthan Royals is a franchise cricket team that represents the state of Rajasthan in the IPL. There was no Icon Player and brand ambassador for the team and it is the only IPL team to have a foreign captain and coach. The Rajasthan Royals franchise is owned by Emerging Media group and Rajasthan Royals is Chaired by Manoj Badale. Bollywood Actress and Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty and her business partner Raj Kundra have bought a 12 per cent stake in the team captained and coached by Shane Warne. Rajasthan Royals Team cost is $67 million.

4. Hyderabad Deccan Chargers Franchise

Hyderabad Deccan Chargers is the franchise that represents the city of Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. From 2009, the team will be led by Adam Gilchrist and coached by Darren Lehmann, both former Australian Test cricketers. There is no Icon Player for the team. Deccan Chargers franchise acquired two West Indian players, Fidel Edwards for a fee of $150,000, and Dwayne Smith for $100,000.
The IPL Hyderabad franchise Deccan Chargers is owned by J Krishan (Deccan Chronicle), the famous media group. Deccan Chargers Team cost is $107 million. The Deccan Chronicle is an English language newspaper simultaneously published in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu in India. The newspaper takes its name from its place of origination, the Deccan region of India.

5. Chennai Superkings Franchise

Chennai SuperKings is the Chennai based franchise of the Indian Premier League. The team is led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, currently the captain of the Indian cricket team and coached by Stephen Fleming. This IPL Cricket 2009 Chennai Super Kings Team is owned by India Cements,who paid US$91 million to acquire the rights to the franchise for the next 10 years. Chennai Super Kings are one of the three franchises with no icon player.Chennai Super Kings of the Indian Premier League bought Andrew Flintoff for USD1,550,000 which was a good $600,000 above his base price of $950,000. Chennai Super Kings Team cost is $91 million.

India Cements Limited is a cement manufacturing company in India. It was established in 1946 and the first plant was set up at Sankarnagar in Tamil Nadu in 1949. It has about seven cement manufacturing plants spread over Southern India catering to major markets in South India and Maharashtra. The capacities of its plants are over 9 million tons per annum. The company is headed by Mr.N.Srinivasan, Vice Chairman and Managing Director.

6. Mumbai Indians Franchise

Mumbai Indians is a cricket team in the Indian Premier League. The team is led by Sachin Tendulkar, who is also the Icon Player for the team. The team is coached by Lalchand Rajput, the former manager of the Indian Cricket Team and Mumbai Indians is owned by India’s biggest conglomerate, Reliance Industries (Mukesh Ambani). Mumbai Indians Team cost is $111.9 million.

Mumbai Indians two players transfer, Ashish Nehra was exchanged with Shikhar Dhawan of Delhi Daredevils and Robin Uthappa was exchanged with Zaheer Khan of Royal Challengers. Jaydev Shah and Shikhar Dhawan were also added to the roster and Dwayne Smith, Dominic Thornely and Ashwell Prince were released from their contracts. Shaun Pollock decided not to return for the second season of IPL, however he kept an association with the franchise. Mumbai Indians purchased J P Duminy for $950,000, Kyle Mills for $150,000 and Mohammad Ashraful for $75,000.

7. Kolkata Knight Riders Franchise

Kolkata Knight Riders is the franchise representing Kolkata in the Indian Premier League, a Twenty20 cricket tournament. The team is led by Sourav Ganguly, who is also the Icon Player for the team and coached by John Buchanan. Kolkata Knight Riders Team is Owner by Bollywood Superhit actor ShahRukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment in partnership with Juhi Chawla Mehta and her husband, Jai Mehta. Kolkata Knight Riders Team cost is $75 million.
Kolkata Knight Riders was among the least active franchises during the offseason, with no player trades. However, the team signed Mohnish Parmar during the offseason and also resigned Ajantha Mendis to a long term deal. The most notable personnel move for Knight Riders came during the 2009 IPL Auction, where the team signed Bangladesh all-rounder Mashrafe Mortaza.

8. Delhi DareDevils Franchise

Delhi Daredevils is the Delhi franchise for the Indian Premier League. Delhi DareDevils IPL Cricket 2009 Team is owned by GMR Group. The team is captained by Virender Sehwag, who is also the designated Icon Player for the franchise. Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is the brand ambassador of the team. Delhi DareDevils Team cost is $84 million.
