Emphatic win for Punjab, beat Mumbai by 3 runs

A lion-hearted effort by the Kings XI Punjab bowlers glossed over the frailties of their batting colleagues as the Mohali-based outfit edged out Mumbai Indians by three runs in a low-scoring thriller in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday.

Chasing 120 for a win, Mumbai Indians managed 116 for seven, thanks to JP Duminy’s 63-ball 59 which proved not enough in the end.

Earlier, Kumar Sangakkara’s unbeaten 45 saved Kings XI Punjab the blushes as the side fumbled and faltered its way to 119 for eight wickets. He was adjudged the ‘Man of the Match’.

In reply, Mumbai Indians realised, much to their horror, that their boat was rocking dangerously early in the chase.

For them, the first 19 balls yielded only 12 runs while costing them the wickets of Sanath Jayasuriya (0), Sachin Tendulkar (1) and Shikhar Dhawan (3).

Irfan Pathan had Jayasuriya caught in the lone slip with his first legitimate delivery and in the next over, Vikramjeet Malik sent groans across the stadium when Mahela Jayawardene caught Tendulkar at point.

Not to be left behind, in-form Yusuf Abdulla trapped Dhawan plumb in front with a toe-crusher and at 12 for three, things looked far from rosy for Mumbai.

Dwayne Bravo (15) scratched around for a while before Ramesh Powar got rid of him.

Earlier, barring Sangakkara, none of the Kings XI Punjab batsmen could make their presence felt.

Sangakkara waged a grim battle with a 44-ball 45 on a day when only three of his teammates returned double digit scores.

Yuvraj Singh’s decision to bat first backfired and by the first strategy break, the Punjab side crawled to 50 in 10 overs with three top order batsmen, including the skipper himself, cooling their heels in the hut.

Openers Karan Goel (12) and Ravi Bopara (6) just could not get going and the first three overs yielded only 10 runs.

The subdued start would have pleased any rival captain but not Sachin Tendulkar who tossed the ball to Harbhajan Singh in the fourth over and the offie struck with his third delivery.

Goel, having slog-swept the spinner for a six in the previous delivery, stepped out to court peril and return stumped after completely misreading the line.

Dwayne Bravo followed in Harbhajan’s footsteps and struck in his first over, removing Bopara.

A lot was expected of Yuvraj (10) but the left-hander let down once again, leaving his team in dire straits.

Tendulkar pressed Sanath Jayasuriya into service and the wily Sri Lankan responded by removing Mahela Jayawardene (7).

To make it worse Irfan Pathan’s (7) was a brief stay, cut short by Zaheer Khan, and Lasith Malinga then castled Wilkin Mota and Piyush Chawla off successive balls to dash hopes of Punjab’s rearguard defiance.

Maya, Ambani, Sonam Kapoor early voters

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, industrialist Anil Ambani and prominent candidates like Milind Deora, Ram Naik and Akhilesh Das were some of the early voters in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections today.

Mayawati, accompanied by her party candidate Akhilesh Das, cast her vote in Lucknow before setting off to campaign
for BSP in Mathura, Bulandshahr and other consituencies. Asking her party supporters to come out and vote,
Mayawati said, “I always appeal to all my supporters to first cast their vote and then start their day’s work. I not only
preach what I say but also practise it. So I came to vote even before having tea or breakfast.”

Anil Ambani jogged his way to the polling booth in South Mumbai and cast his vote in the first hour of polling while actor Sonam Kapoor, of Delhi 6 fame, was excited at having voted for the first time.

Milind Deora, the Congress candidate from South Mumbai, appealed to the young voters to cast their vote. His
high-profile constituency usually witnesses a low voter turnout.

He said after the Mumbai terror attack — which took place in Taj and Trident hotels located in his constituency–
security was a big issue.

Ram Naik, the BJP candidate from Mumbai North who was defeated by actor Govinda in 2004, said he was confident of winning the polls this time.

Naxals strike in Purulia as third phase polling begins

* 107 seats in nine states and two UTs to be decided
* Cong leader Priya Dutt and SP candidate Nafisa Ali also in fray
* Anantnag in J&K goes to polls
* Polling will be over in 372 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats today

India has begun voting in the third phase of polling for the Lok Sabha, wherein, 107 seats in nine states and two Union Territories will be decided.

The states and Union Territories going to polls on Thursday are – 25 seats in Gujarat, 16 in Madhya Pradesh, 15 in Uttar Pradesh, 14 in West Bengal, 11 in Bihar, 11 in Karnataka, 10 in Maharashtra and one each in Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

As the polling began on Thursday, a suspected landmine blast has been reported from Purulia in West Bengal. Two security jawans have been injured. Purulia is one of the 14 constituencies polling in West Bengal and is a part of the trouble-torn Maoist belt.

And in the troubled Lalgarh region of the Jhargram constituency, despite a fleet of 36 buses deployed by the EC to bring voters to the polling stations, villagers mostly stayed away. The Maoists have called for a vote boycott and voters are scared.

The completion of the third phase of polling would mean that the polling would be over in 372 of the 543 seats. Polling for the remaining 171 seats would take place in two phases on May 7 for 85 seats and May 13 for 86 seats.

In Bihar, it’s a prestige battle with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar (Janata Dal-United) pitted against the combined might of Lalu Prasad Yadav (Rashtriya Janata Dal) and Ram Vilas Paswan (Lok Janashakti Party).

From the Madhepura constituency, considered a stronghold of Lalu Prasad, JD-U’s national president Sharad Yadav is fighting against RJD’s Ravindra Charan Yadav while the Congress, is fighting it alone here.

Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, Anantnag is voting in this phase of Lok Sabha elections. Mehboob Beg of JKN is contesting from the Anantnag seat against Peer M Hussain of the PDP.

The fate of several heavyweights such as UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Lal Krishna Advani hangs in balance in this phase of the polling.

L K Advani, who is a five-time Lok Sabha MP from Gandhinagar, is contesting the seat against noted artist Mallika Sarabhai, who is an independent candidate.

Mumbai also votes in the third phase of polling amidst speculations that a four-day weekend might hamper the voting percentage in the city. Those in fray from Mumbai are Congress leader Priya Dutt, contesting against BJP’s Mahesh Jethmalani; Sanjay Nirupam (Congress) against Ram Naik (BJP); and Congress leader Milind Deora.

Apart from these, others whose fate would be locked in the ballot in this phase are:

* Jaswant Singh (BJP) from Darjeeling
* Deepa Das Munshi (Congress) from Raiganj
* Mausam Noor (Congress) from Malda Uttar
* Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI) from Ghatal
* Basudeb Acharia (CPM) from Bankura

Trains collide in Chennai; at least 7 dead, 20 injured

Chennai, April 29: In an incident reflecting gross negligence on the part of the Railways, two trains collided at Vyasarpadi Railway Station in Chennai on Wednesday, killing at least seven people and injuring over 20.

According to reports, the accident occurred at around 6:00 am when a local train hit a static goods train after taking the wrong route on the Chennai-Thiruvallur route. The impact of the collision was such that five coaches of the local train caught fire. Four bodies have been retrieved by the fire and rescue personnel, police said, adding that more casualties were feared.

“The accident occurred a little before 6 a.m. at the northern Vyasarpadi suburb. A passenger train collided with a goods train comprising several oil tanks. The identities of the motormen who operated the two trains are being sought,” a Southern Railway spokesperson said.

Unconfirmed reports have put the number of dead at seven. The injured were admitted to the General Hospital adjacent to the central railhead.

Sources said that the local train suddenly left the Chennai Central station before its scheduled time and did not stop at the next three designated stations. There are also reports that an unauthorised person drove away the local train.

Neelu Itra, CPRO of the Southern Railways said, “According to primary information four persons are killed and six injured.” She added that the wagons of the local train were empty and those inside it were unauthorised passengers.

“We heard a loud noise and then saw several railway compartments in flames. The smell emanating from bodies retrieved from the mangled coaches was nauseating,” said MN Selvi, who lives near the Vyasarpadi railway station.

All local and long distance trains coming from Arakkonam (over 30 km north of Chennai) towards Chennai Central have been stopped enroute, a railway official said.

“I’m going to miss my important meeting for negotiating a letter of credit worth Rs110 million and tying up supplies,” NS Veeraraghavan, an executive stranded at Perambur, said.

The family of SK Vimalanathan, who was scheduled to be married before an auspicious period ends at 10.30 a.m., was stuck at Pattathiram.

“Forcing my aged parents and relatives to alight on the tracks with luggage is out of question. We will have to delay the marriage beyond 3 pm, when the next auspicious hour begins,” said S Krishnamurthy, the groom’s father.

Yusuf, Smith halt Daredevils’ victory march

April 29, 2009 by admin

ipl-yusufYusuf Pathan struck a blistering half century while Graeme Smith Graeme Smith muscled his way to a belligerent 42 to power Rajasthan Royals to a five wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils at the SuperSport Park here on Tuesday.

Chasing a modest 144, Rajasthan Royals rode on Pathan’s buccaneering 62 of 30 balls and Smith’s sensible 42 off 46 balls to cruise to 147 for five in 18.3 overs to register their second victory of the tournament and end Daredevils winning run.

Elected to bat, earlier, a fighting half-century from AB de Villiers and some lusty hitting down the order from Daniel Vettori and Mithun Manhas helped Delhi Daredevils post 143 for seven after Rajasthan bowlers sent packing four Delhi top-order batsmen with the scoreboard reading 49.

The Royals started their run chase on a cautious note but were little unlucky as Rob Quiney (4) departed early lbw to Nehra, but TV replays clearly showed he hit the ball.

Swapnil Asnodkar (11), demoted from the opening position, showed glimpses of his last year’s brilliance, picking up 10 runs off Pradeep Sangwan’s first over before running himself out in search of a non-existent single.

Next man in Paul Valthaty (1) didn’t trouble the scorers. Graeme Smith, on the other hand, played the role of a sheet anchor, but didn’t get ample support from the other end.

The strategic timeout seemed to have worked in Delhi’s favour as Mishra struck twice after the break, first dismissing Jadeja caught in the deep by Sangwan and then stumped Rajasthan skipper Shane Warne. But Pathan had other plans as hit two consecutive sixes and a four of Vettori to take 19 runs of the 13th over and signal his intentions.

As if that was not enoungh, neeeding 35 off 24 balls, Mishra gave away 18 runs in his last over, courtesy a six and four from Pathan and a boundary from Smith.

Pathan was in a hurry to wrap up the proceedings and hit Nehra for consecutive sixes and four to draw curtains on the match.

Earlier, De Villiers (50 off 40) and Vettori (29) ensured that Delhi put up a decent total, stitching together a crucial 56-run sixth-wicket.

It was a dream start for the Royals as the dynamic Delhi opening duo of Virender Sehwag (16) and Gautam Gambhir (8) failed to make make any impact once again.

Dimitri Mascarenhas (2/28) picked up the opening duo Sehwag and Gambhir in his eventful second over after the Delhi skipper clobbered him for two boundaries.

Gambhir was the first to depart when skipper Shane Warne latched on to a blinder at the first slip in the third ball of Mascarenhas’ second over.

Sehwag, who hit the Englishman for a six in the very first ball he faced, followed soon, giving a skier to Kamran Khan at mid-on after hitting Mascarenhas for a boundary.

First change Munaf Patel (2/14) struck gold in his very first over when in-form Tillakaratne Dilshan’s (7) ambitious pull found Swapnil Asnodkar at square-leg.

Skipper Warne (2/32) added more woes for Delhi when he picked up Dinesh Karthik in his first over with the wicketkeeper batsman giving away a simple catch back to the Australian.

Delhi could have been reduced to 66 for five at the halfway mark had Munaf not bowled a no ball in the ninth over with Vettori edging one to Warne at first slip.

The Delhi batsmen, who found runs hard to come by, picked up their tempo in the 12th over with Vettori first hitting Ravindra Jadeja for a boundary and then De Dilliers managed another to take 13 runs of that over.

De Villiers was little lucky as Yusuf Pathan squandered an easy run out opportunity in the next over after the South African dispatched him to the stands in the previous delivery.

But it took the inspirational Rajasthan captain to break the partnership, trapping dangerman De Villiers in front of the wicket, but not before the right-hander scored his fifty.

However, Vettori and Mithun Manhas (23 off 16) were in no mood to give up and their lusty hitting at the end ensured a respectable score for Daredevils.

LTTE shot fleeing civilians, says top Tiger leader

The confessions of two top LTTE leaders – Daya Master, the former media coordinator, and George Master, a translator for an LTTE strategist, were broadcast for the first time on Sri Lanka’s state run television network.

Their confessions have confirmed the worst fears of many – the massacre of innocent civilians by the LTTE.

The two former LTTE leaders, who surrendered in April to the Sri Lankan Army, also confirmed that the Tamil Tigers were holding civilians hostage.

“LTTE stopped people from leaving, but the strong managed to escape. The LTTE killed many fleeing civilians,” said George Master.

But ironically, as Prabhakaran’s war crimes are revealed to the world by two of his own aides, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram says India does not wish Prabhakaran ill.

Speaking to NDTV in an exclusive interview, Chidambaram also appealed to him to lay down arms and negotiate.

“We have obligation to Tamil people. We don’t wish Prabhakaran ill. We want welfare of Lankan Tamils and we appeal to Prabhakaran to surrender. We appeal to LTTE to lay down arms,” said Prabhakaran.

However the big question now is where Tiger chief Prabhakaran is and will he be caught alive. Never, says someone who has known him closely.

Speaking to NDTV, Col Karuna has said that Prabhakaran will never be caught alive.

Karuna was Prabhakaran’s bodyguard, rising to become his second in command. But he left the LTTE when Prabhakaran refused to accept a peace deal in 2003. Because of the split, the LTTE lost almost one-third the territory it held through him. Now he is a government minister, in-charge of National Integration.
